Giuseppe Tornatore also directed “Cinema Paradiso“, which was presented earlier as part of the Italian Movie Series. The movie, released as “Malèna” in Italy, was cut by 16 minutes to produce the US release as “Malena”. The two releases were nominated for a total of 28 awards, winning 7.
The story is of a boy coming of age: as Italy enters WWII, a teenage boy in a small, narrow-minded Sicilian town becomes obsessed with a young woman. Wikipedia’s write up on the movie notes that Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie an average rating of 5.4/10, with a critics consensus stating the movie “ends up objectifying the character of the movie’s title.” David Roony of Variety wrote that the film combines “… a coming-of-age story with the sad odyssey of a woman punished for her beauty, the film ultimately has too little depth, subtlety, …” (from Wikipedia)
