Join Melanie Wolf as she shares her journey to master the art and science of making this delicious treat. Wolf began by traveling with her husband\, Denis St. Amand\, to Bologna\, Italy to attend Gelato University. She returned to take more advanced courses on the chemistry and science behind it so she could create her own flavors.\n\nWolf’s story continues beyond her highly acclaimed gelateria in downtown Westerly. She has also competed in the Carpigiani Challenge\, World Masters Gelato Festival\, and was one of three finalists from New York to compete in the North American Finals (Los Angeles\, 2025).\n\n\n\nNote: Unless specifically noted as being streamed or recorded\, the lectures in the lecture series hosted by the Dante Society of Westerly are live events only and are not recorded. SUMMARY:Cin Cin 2026: An Exploration of Classic Italian Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 SoupyFest series of events\, the UNITED in partnership with the Dante Society of Westerly presents Anthony Caporale for a tasting and deep-dive into the evolution\, ingredient history\, and cultural significance of Italian cocktails.\nAnthony Caporale is an award-winning mixology author and star of “The Imbible” series of long-running Off-Broadway musicals about the history of cocktails and spirits. Known throughout the beverage industry for his dynamic and entertaining talks\, this veteran of the New York stage will guide you through the history of classic Italian drinks\, including live demonstrations of how to craft them perfectly at home. SUMMARY:Movie: Malena
DESCRIPTION:The United Theatre and the Dante Society of Westerly present a screening of Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Malena”.\nThe movie was released in Italy in 2000\, followed by a release in the US in 2001. \n\nGiuseppe Tornatore also directed “Cinema Paradiso“\, which was presented earlier as part of the Italian Movie Series.  The movie\, released as “Malèna” in Italy\, was cut by 16 minutes to produce the US release as “Malena”.  The two releases were nominated for a total of 28 awards\, winning 7. \nThe story is of a boy coming of age: as Italy enters WWII\, a teenage boy in a small\, narrow-minded Sicilian town becomes obsessed with a young woman.  Wikipedia’s write up on the movie notes that Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie an average rating of 5.4/10\, with a critics consensus stating the movie “ends up objectifying the character of the movie’s title.”   David Roony of Variety wrote that the film combines “… a coming-of-age story with the sad odyssey of a woman punished for her beauty\, the film ultimately has too little depth\, subtlety\, …” (from Wikipedia) \n\nLength 1 hr 31 min; “R” rated\nFilmed in Sicily\nFilm is in Italian with English captions\nFilmed in  Sicily (Noto and Syracuse)\n\nNominated for 2 Oscars (Best Cinematography; Best Music\, Original Score)\nNominated for 2 (US) Golden Globe Awards (USA: Best Foreign Language Film; USA: Best Original Score – Motion Picture )\nA trailer and additional information is available from IMDb\nThe plot synopsis and other information on the film can be found on WikipediA\n\n\nTickets may be purchased at the theater at time of the show or online.  For online purchases\, see the United Theatre web site for the movie.

SUMMARY:Italian American Writers
DESCRIPTION:As part of the UNITED Soupy Fest series\, the UNITED and The Dante Society present an author talk\, selected readings\, and book-signing with four members of the Italian American Writers Association.\n\n  \nLAURETTE FOLK\nLaurette Folk’as fiction\, essays\, and poems have been published in Waxwing\, Gravel\, Brilliant Flash Fiction\, Boston Globe Magazine\, and Best Small Fictions. Her first novel\, A Portal to Vibrancy won the Independent Press Award for New Adult Fiction. Her second novel\, The End of Aphrodite\, won the Eric Hoffer Award for General Fiction and is described by Kirkus Reviews as “[A] haunting and poignant reflection on grief\, spirituality\, and the loving bonds that provide guidance and sustenance.”  Her third novel\, Eleison\, is now out from Bordighera Press and was listed as a quarter finalist for the Booklife Prize. Laurette is a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee and a graduate of the Vermont College MFA in Writing program. \n  \nDANIELLE JONES\nDanielle Jones is a poet and educator\, with over a decade of experience in arts administration. She holds an MFA from UMass Boston. Her work has appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal\, Best New Poets\, Consequence Magazine\, Memorious\, Southern Poetry Review\, Rattle\, and elsewhere. She is a recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writer’s Award\, a St. Botolph’s Club Emerging Artist Award\, and a Mass Cultural Council Artist Fellowship. She teaches writing at the University of New Hampshire\, where she directs the Nossrat Yassini Poetry Festival and manages YAS Press. \n  \nJULIA LISELLA\nJulia Lisella’s latest collection of poems\, Our Lively Kingdom (Bordighera Press)\, was named a finalist in the 2023 Paterson Book Prize and Grand Prize Finalist and Poetry Honorable Mention for the Eric Hoffer Book Award. Her other collections include Always\, Terrain\, and the chapbook\, Love Song Hiroshima. Her poems have appeared in Ploughshares\, Alaska Quarterly\, The Common\, Nimrod\, Pangyrus and many others. She has received writing residencies at MacDowell\, Millay and the Vermont Center for the Arts. She teaches at Regis College and co-curates the Italian-American Writers Association Literary Reading Series in Boston. \n  \nCARLA PANCIERA\nCarla Panciera’s collection of short stories\, Bewildered\, received the Grace Paley Short Fiction Award from the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. Her short story\, “The Kind of People Who Look at Art” was indexed by Junot Diaz as a distinguished story in Best American Short Stories for 2017.  She was the James E. Kilgore scholar in Nonfiction at Bread Loaf Writers Conference and is the recipient of an Individual Artist Grant in Creative Nonfiction from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Barnflower: A Rhode Island Farm Memoir\, was released in the spring of 2023 by Loom Press\, Amesbury\, MA.  She has also published three collections of poetry: One of the Cimalores (Cider Press) and No Day\, No Dusk\, No Love and One Trail of Longing\, Another of String(Bordighera). \n  \n\nTicket information will be available on the United Theatre’s web site.
